What’s the difference between the Basic and Additional CESG?
The Basic Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) is available to everyone in Canada. That’s the 20% of your RESP contributions that are matched by the federal government. So if you invest $2,500 in a year, you’ll automatically get $500 from the Basic CESG.
Lower income subscribers might also qualify for the Additional CESG, which is an additional 10% to 20% on the first $500 they contribute in a year. Someone who meets the income eligibility criteria could receive an extra $50 to $100 a year from the government.
The CESG and Additional CESG combined are subject to the $7,200 limit.
