About Us

Leading education savings for over half a century

The Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation (CST) has one aim: To make it possible for every Canadian to plan for their children’s post-secondary education. CST Spark is the latest chapter from the ongoing story of innovative education savings that began in 1960.

A vision and a legacy

In 1960, the Canadian Scholarship Trust (CST) Foundation was born with the objective to make post-secondary education accessible to our children. Today, that’s more relevant than ever.

Empowering Canadian children

Our creators laid the foundation of organized education savings. They pioneered the Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP), and lobbied government for tax incentives and grants. The result: half a million children received the education to achieve their goals.

Building on a tradition of innovation

Today, we continue to inspire and revolutionize education savings with CST Spark – the simple modern RESP that combines top investment expertise with the latest technology.

Our vision

Helping all Canadians plan to make post-secondary education possible.

An inspirational journey

  • 1960

    Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation was established, offering education savings plans for university.

  • 1972

    Canada introduced the RESP.
    Our proposed change to the Income Tax Act was approved. Students in lower tax brackets, paid little or no tax on RESP earnings.

  • 1984

    Annual graduate awards were introduced. Our first award was for $5,000 and named after one of our founders, Peter Wright.

  • 1998

    The Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) was introduced.

  • 2004 - 2016

    We continued to lobby for more grants, which led to:
    2004 – Canada Learning Bond (CLB) and Additional CESG grants;
    2007 – Quebec Education Savings Incentives(QESI);
    2014 – Saskatchewan Advantage Grant for Education Savings (SAGES);
    2016 – British Columbia Training and Education Savings Grant (BCTESG)

  • 2018

    CST Spark is launched providing a new, digital way for Canadians to save for education.

Supporting our community

Every step we take is guided by our vision to help our community access the power of education.

  • Awards and scholarships: CST Foundation has presented Canadian students almost $2M in awards, scholarships and bursaries.
  • Innovative plans: In past years we lobbied to introduce RESPs; today, we make investing online possible with CST Spark and Bright Plan.
  • Funding learning: Our CST Inspired Minds Learning Project has awarded over $700,000 to fund new learning programs and activities for children across Canada.
